Carbon Taxes

1. Exxon has endorsed and put up $1 million to lobby for the Climate Leadership Council's carbon tax proposal.
2. A per-ton tax on the carbon dioxide emissions embedded in fuels or other products.
3. By 2025, emissions would drop 39-46% below the 2005 levels.
4. The tax would have to be more than $100 per ton.
5. The electricity industry would be most impacted.
6. A $50 carbon tax would reduce emissions from the transportation industry by only 2%. The only way to reduce emissions would be driving less.
7. It is a regressive tax because it impacts poor people more than the rich because the poor spend more of their income on energy.
